The council was acting on a recommendation of city planning staff, which wants to review land use policies in the redevelopment area. The decision is being postponed until mid-November.
The city currently has eminent domain authority over 127 parcels of about 1,700 acres of land covered by the redevelopment plan. A centerpiece project of the plan is a $27 million effort to continue the transform of a stretch of Marina Boulevard into a thriving "auto row."
The city made more than $600,000 in sales tax revenues from the first group of dealerships that opened there in 1998. The city hopes to gain another $500,000 after two new dealerships open next year, and use the additional revenue for parks, senior housing and youth programs.
