In August, single-family permits were up nearly 7% over the same period last year, according to housing firm the Meyers Group. August had 2,915 permits issued, a whooping 26 percent increase from July's pace.

Some builders may be stocking their pipeline with permits in anticipation of the possible passage of Proposition 202, which would require most cities in the state to draw growth boundaries that would limit development. The vote is Nov. 7.

Although permit activity is up, closings are keeping pace. Meyers reported 2,813 new-home closings during August.
