During a meeting with officials from Presidio Trust, the federal nonprofit governing the 224-year-old former military post, NPS regional head John Reynolds expressed the agency's opinion that the size and design of the 900,000-sf project is wholly incompatible with the Presidio National Historic Landmark District.

The Trust, which says it will take the information into consideration, was expected to approve the project in the next two months. Construction was expected in spring 2002. Under the proposal, Lucasfilm would pay $5 million a year in rent for its center, slated for the abandoned Letterman Army Hospital on Lombard Street, near the Presidio's eastern entrance.
