Giventhat Congress and President Clinton are expected tosign on to the commitment, the approval means thatfederal sources would pay for about 55 percent of the11.4-mile line's total cost.

Local sources -- thestate, Hennepin County, the Metropolitan AirportsCommission and the city of Minneapolis - have alreadypromised to spend $291 million on the line. While theproject must still receive approval from the FederalTransit Administration, the congressional promisenearly ensures that action. The line is expected to beup and running by 2004.
