The lawsuit was filed last week in Pima County Superior Court, just a week after the Arizona Supreme Court rejected a final appeal by Wal-Mart of an earlier challenge to the law that limits the size the grocery store section in Wal-Marts larger than 100,000-sf. The law also requires large stores to get special approval of plans to deal with noise, lights and traffic.
Tucson isn't the only city in Arizona to oppose the development of big box retailers. Four cities in metropolitan Phoenix--Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale and Peoria --want to curtail the creation of super-sized retail stores within their boundaries and are considering enacting restrictions to limit their size and where they can be located.
