Congress Approves Private Development of Federal Site

WASHINGTON, DC-Congress passed a bill allowing private development of the Southeast Federal Center. The 55-acre site on the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington is the largest undeveloped tract of land in the District.

Local and federal government officials believe private development may spur growth in an area where the Federal officials have long sought--and failed--to build an enclave of federal offices.

Two proposals for the new U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters involve private development of the center. The bill is necessary if either proposal would be chosen for the 1.3 million-sf lease.
