Awaiting approvals is yet another nearby high-rise apartment development. Based on preliminary plans, Omni Equities' River House would have three towers of 42 stories each.
The FAA is talking about a possible 17-story height limit. It fears that anything taller would compromise the ability of radar at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to keep track of the bulk of incoming air traffic.
Most planes heading into the airport now approach from the Atlantic and then fly just to the north of Downtown. If the air traffic lanes were to be moved, airport officials say, it would reduce the number of flights that could be handled each day.
The airport's existing handling capacity is already said to be strained by rapid growth.
