Formerly a supporter of the new airport, the South County Economic Development Council board of directors voted Wednesday to oppose the project because the Federal Aviation Administration fears that it could cause delays at other airports. The board notes such delays could harm the local economy.

The county board of supervisors also is opposed to the proposed $1.1-billion project. Supporters of the cargo facility say it would pump millions into the local economy and vow to push forward with efforts to gain approval for the project.

The San Diego City Council, which holds final sway on the project, hasn't yet scheduled a hearing on the matter.
