Mirabito Mooney & Associates Inc., a Walnut Creek self-storage company, recently finished construction of a StoragePro mini-storage facility along I-5 between the Eighth Street and Downing Avenue off-ramps and accessed by Turnpike Road. That two-month-old facility has 71,000 sf of storage and 600 individual units, and is about 25% occupied.
Another storage facility is rising on 3.5 acres at the intersection of Thornton and Davis roads. Thornton Road Self-Storage, as its being called, will provide about 80,000 sf of storage space and 672 individual spaces sometime next spring. Meanwhile, at existing facilities, expansions are in the works. The Mister Space Self Storage facility and another owned by the Grupe Cos. are both expanding to compete.
Until two years ago, the city was overbuilt with mini-storage facilities, and no new applications had been submitted or processed since 1990.
