"We have a huge customer base and we need to have facilities tosupport our customers," Eileen Elam, UMC's spokeswoman, tellsGlobeSt.com. "Boston is a good high-tech hub and Waltham is thehigh-tech hub of the Boston area."

The office here will serve as a sales office and a customersupport center. The company is looking to grow its client base inthis area and anticipates doubling its office here by next year. Ina released statement, Jim Kupec, president of worldwide marketingand sales for UMC USA, said, "The Boston area offers a strategicgeographic location for us to increase our customer service supportfor the Eastern United States. Not only is the regionwell-established in our major target industries, including consumerelectronics and communications, but it is also the ideal locationto facilitate the building of new relationships in the EasternUnited States and Canada. This presence will provide increasedopportunities for better interactions with new and existingcustomers coast-to-coast."

UMC operates seven wafer fabrication plants in Tawain's HsinchuScience Park. In addition to the company's two US locations, thecompany has offices in Japan and the Netherlands.
