Having overcome problems with the NRC in the late 1980s, FPL spent $237 million in upgrades in 1990. The plant withstood the eye of Hurricane Andrew's Category 4 force winds in 1992 and has had positive evaluations since, according to published reports. The application approval process will likely take two years to complete.
Public comment on the license extension application ends Dec. 22. Environmental and nuclear activist concerns have surfaced, as have worries of surrounding residents about the current 800 employees and continuing the $60-million benefit to the community.
