Some $27 million of the $41 million addition is slated forexpanding the station's capacity. It currently serves about 13,000riders daily. Planners estimate a tripling of that number over thenext 20 years. The other $14 million is earmarked for parkingdecks, sidewalks and other items. The additional funds are beingacquired through a bond issue.

Construction is under way on the first of two 14-story, onemillion-sf office towers that MARTA will lease to BellSouth Corp.The tower is expected to be completed in early 2002. The Center isbeing developed by MARTA in a joint venture with Carter &Associates.

The project has been beset with opposition from nearbyneighborhoods. One neighborhood managed to stop work on the sitefor 17 days earlier this year, but recently lost its bid for aninjunction to stop the development.
