LA Mayor Richard Riordan, many businesses and some commercial real estate landlords in the airport area have been pushing for expansion, in part because they say it would boost business. But hundreds of homeowners oppose expansion, saying it would create an unbearable amount of ground traffic, noise and air pollution.
Airport officials say the six-month comment period will likely begin around Jan. 18, when they are expected to release the blueprint for their expansion plans. That means no decision will be made until at least July, after Riordan leaves office and several new City Council members take office.
Some expansion opponents have said they'll vote against any candidate who pledges to see the airport grow.
