Other occupants for the Hanger One structure will be a book store and, provided negotiations go through, at the south end there will be a Challenger Learning Center, a science education facility that uses space simulators to teach science, technology and mathematics. There might also be a small museum in Hanger One to illustrate its place in the history of aviation. Originally, the Hanger was to have been converted into a multiscreen cinema, but that plan has been shifted to a separate structure.

"The store will help ensure the preservation of Hanger One, which is on the National Register of Historic Places," says Don Owen, economic redevelopment direct of the Glen Town Center and the Village of Glenview. "Von Maur will draw other strong retailers to the Town Center [as well]." Construction of the store is slated to begin in the summer of 2001 and may be finished in time for the holiday season of 2002.

This will be the third store in the Chicago area for the upscale chain, with others under development in the southwestern and western suburbs. All of its 14 stores are currently in the Midwest, including units in Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska as well as Ilinois.

Developer of the retail portion of the Glen Town Center is San Diego-based DDR OliverMcMillan, which specializes in retail centers with movie theater anchors. Mid America Real Estate Corp. is the leasing agent for the retail part of the project, and Mesirow Stein Real Estate serves acts as the development advisor to Glenview.
