The city could support an additional 58,000-sf of ballroom space for a total of 80,000-sf, according to the report. The study also found that the city could support a similar amount of breakout space and an additional 157,000-sf of exhibit space for a total of 300,000-sf.
The city council accepted the report last week and will now try to find out how much such a center would cost and how to pay for it. The report identified two potential sources of funding: an increase in the hotel-motel tax and the establishment of time-share investments in which corporations would pay for as much as one quarter of the cost of a new facility. A location for the facility has not yet been determined.
