The additional beds will be designated for critical and maternity care. The expansion also calls for the construction of an enclosed walkway connecting the hospital and the campus medical building. Improvements will be made to areas of the hospital devoted to critical care, medical-surgical care, maternity care, radiology, outpatient services and the hospital lobby.
The hospital is located along the rapidly expanding Interstate 29-Barry Road corridor in Kansas City, North. The Northland area has seen tremendous growth since the hospital opened 11 years ago.
G. Richard Hastings, president and chief executive officer of the St. Luke's Shawnee Mission Health System, and N. Gary Wages, president and chief executive officer of the Northland hospital, say the expansion is necessary to ensure appropriate response to the community's medical needs.
A letter of intent for the expansion and renovation has been submitted to the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee. A full application will be filed this month, with a hearing expected to take place in April.
Expansion projects are also underway at two other Northland hospitals, North Kansas City Hospital and Liberty Hospital.
