The station, along with a 50-mile pipeline to bring natural gas to the site from the Interstate 5 corridor, will be constructed at a cost of $250 million, Rich Fernandez of Duke's Global Asset Development office tells GlobeSt.com. It will replace a once-planned pair of nuclear plants envisioned by Energy Northwest for the area. "We hope to have the plant and the pipeline in operation in 2004," Fernandez said.
Tacoma Power and Grays Harbor Public Utility District are both members of Energy Northwest. As part of the sales agreement, Energy Northwest will turn over its permits to Duke, and will have an option to purchase up to 100 megawatts of power per year from the plant at cost for 5 years. The station's electric output could provide a substantial part of Tacoma's average power requirement for its 146,000 residential and business customers.
