In doing so, the 27-year-old Sea World beat rival 30-year-old Walt Disney World to the ticket-upping entrance gate by two days. Disney followed with a new $50.88 net admission, topping Sea World's price by a nickel. Universal Orlando remains quiet on its plans. Universal's net admission is $49.22.
Sea World's decision to raise prices is controversial since the park attracted 5.2 million visitors in 2000, lower than any of the seven major Orlando theme parks. Disney drew an estimated 16 million guests, according to trade publications. Traditionally, Orlando's attractions follow the lead of Disney in increasing prices; never raising prices first above the market leader.
Sea World's admission price, with tax, for children, 3 to 9, is $41.29. Disney charges $40.28 net. Until 1997, Sea World charged less than either Disney or Universal. Disney's prices are up 65%, or an average 5.9% percent increase per year since 1989. For example, Disney charged adults $28 admission in 1989.
