South Cove Commons Developers, a locally-based arm of Durable Construction, got the necessary approvals back in 1996, broke ground about 18 months ago, and has weathered some gear-shifting on the part of its lead tenant. The prime anchor was supposed to be an Edwards Supermarket, but the chain's owner, Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, merged it with its Stop & Shop operation and renamed them all Stop & Shop. The reorganization caused some delays in getting the store ready for business.
Other key tenants include the 10-theater South Cove Cinemas, Outback Steakhouse, Wendy's, and Hollywood Video. Of the 233,000 sf, which Bayonne officials say makes it the biggest shopping center in their city, about 75% of the space is gone, according to Vincent Alessi, project manager for the developer. Alessi is also a vice president of Durable Construction, which is building the project.
Altogether, the shopping center will occupy 20 acres of prime waterfront property. An office building is also under construction and is expected to be ready for occupancy by mid-year.
