Symantec spokesman Phil Weiler tells GlobeSt the company's existing Southern Oregon operations consist of 160,000 sf in five seperate buildings in downtown Eugene, Springfield's better-known neighbor to the west. Two of the buildings are former departments stores. "Not many people need (non-operational) escalators in their building," quipps Weiler. "It's a great old building, but it has issues."
Eugene city officials had hoped to convince Symantec to stay, but Weiler said the company, after seven years of leasing, wanted its own, newer space that could easily accomodate future growth. The Cupertino, CA-based company's local operation employs more than 600 people, and expects to expand that to between 800 and 1,000 employees when the new space it ready in early 2002.
The property on which it will develop its new care center is in Springfield's enterprise zone, which means annual tax breaks of $500,000 for the next few years. The space won't be as centrally located, says Weiler, but it will be much better equipped for the company's needs.
