Now, a group made up of officials of five Northern New Jersey counties feels it has some answers as far as solving those congestion problems without stifling the region's economy in any way. "There is no magic bullet," conceded Judith Schleicher, chairperson of the I-80 Mobility Task Force, based here, at a public meeting yesterday in which her group inveiled a series of proposals. "But there are ways we can lower the number of vehicles on the road."

Among the options she put on the table: increasing bus service, which would entail state participation; moving ahead with a couple of commuter rail projects; building more park-and-ride facilities; and adding some mass transit options for people who commute from Pennsylvania to jobs in New Jersey.

The meeting was attended by Federal and state officials, who are expected to play at least some role in the ongoing effort to reduce congestion and enhance traffic flow in the northern part of the state.
