One of the few former Caldor's store that didn't move in the first round, the 114,600-sf unit at Linden Plaza shopping center, was vacant for two years. But the wait was worth it--Linden Plaza and owner Starwood Heller have hit the jackpot.
Wal-Mart, the nation's largest and arguably most aggressive retailer, has taken the vacant store, where it will install a slimmed-down version of its prototype store (most Wal-Marts are 150,000 sf and up). Wal-Mart will squeeze its typical merchandise mix into the smaller building, but will add a garden center and additional parking.
The new store will be open in July, according to Tod Heller, vice president of Edgewater, NJ-based Starwood Heller. "Bringing the world's largest retailer to anchor the center will enhance the visibility of all of its tenants," according to Heller.
Linden Plaza totals 290,000 sf. Its other tenants include a Stop & Shop supermarket; Modell's Sporting Goods, one of metro New York's dominant retailers in that category; and Pay-Half, a deep discount retailer.
