San Jose's downtown redevelopment follows several similar initiatives recently undertaken by other Bay Area cities, including Redwood City, Pleasant Hill and Pinole. Last month, three developers were chosen as finalists in the race to reshape San Jose's downtown - Palo Alto-based Retail Renaissance Partners, New York-based Related Companies and Los Angeles-based CIM Group. Redevelopment Agency officials will choose a winner in April. In total, 1.6 million sf will be redeveloped.

At the heart of redevelopment efforts are five downtown blocks as well as four historic buildings on the northwest corner of San Fernando and First streets.
