Conspicuously absent from the list of projects, however, is any major outlay for repairs to the Driscoll Bridge in Middlesex County. Besides connecting key growth areas in the county, including Metropark, with points south, the span, which dates to the 1950s, is the key link between all of metro New York City and NJ's shore points. The bridge will get $1 million toward preliminary work, but major work is on hold until the Authority can find a way to finance the $150-million project without raising tolls.
Projects that are moving ahead include $2.3 million for a new ramp leading to Metropark; new connections between the Parkway and I-78; road widening in fast-growing Ocean County; and improvements at the intersection of the Parkway and US Route 9 in Middlesex, where new office development has helped turn Exit 123 into one of the most congested in the region.
