Seagate's nine leased sites in Longmont are being consolidated with the opening. Seagate employs about 1,000 people in the area. While other high-tech companies have cut back, the fast-growing Seagate has nearly doubled its workforce in the past four years.
The high-tech building includes eight clean rooms that are needed for dust-free manufacturing. It boasts an open design to allow employees to work together and features an indoor fitness center and basketball courts. The complex is connected to a trail system.
US Rep. Mark Udall, D-CO, had been on hand for the recent grand opening. Udall serves as a member of the congressional science and technology committee. Udall is an ardent backer of Colorado's high-tech industry, which has grown by 67% from 1993 to 1998.
