University Plans New Housing in Tight Market

SANTA CRUZ, CA-The University of California at Santa Cruz is getting creative to provide housing for students in a tight local rental market. Come fall, the school will open additional on-campus residence halls to add housing for slightly more than 400 students. In addition, it plans to set up modular-housing units in the Lower Quarry area for another 151 students.

In fall, the university is also planning to lease the Santa Cruz Holiday Inn on Ocean Street, providing housing arrangements for another 250 students. Since the school is leasing the entire hotel, it will also use the facility as short-term housing for faculty, staff and other visitors. Specific terms of the lease have not yet been disclosed.
