The council voted to approve the 512-room Westin Hotel, which would be built by JMI Realty, a company headed by Padres owner John Moores. The vote on the hotel is the first in a series of ballpark-related agreements for the council will recast votes to remove any taint left from the involvement of former Councilwoman Valerie Stallings in the original decisions.
The council will reconsider reaffirming the other agreements Mar. 6.
The hotel measure was voted on sooner because financing arrangements for the project are scheduled to close before Marc. 6.
City officials insisted yesterday that approval of the hotel is not directly linked to the ballpark. They said the hotel is needed to serve the expanded Downtown convention center.
