The five-year-old City of Lakewood wants the park as it believes it would be a boon to its economic development. It is asking the City of Tacoma, Pierce County and the state Legislature to support the project as well via incentives to the developer.
The package Lakewood wants to see offered to Great Northwest, headquartered in Louisville, Ky., would include 30-acres of mostly-vacant land, a break in sales taxes to the tune of $6 million and about $10 million for new freeway access. The total size of the property proposed for the theme park is 80 acres, and the city is even considering purchasing the land itself, which it would then lease to Great Northwest.
The complex's amusement facilities would include, among other attractions, a water park and roller coasters. Reports say Great Northwest Development is prepared to spend $110 million for the project. 2003 is targeted for the park's opening.
