Morris County has one of New Jersey's most active programs of taking farmland out of circulation. The MCADB is looking to buy an additional 12 farms totaling nearly 700 acres between now and the end of the year.
In the latest deal, the Board used a state grant of just under $242,000 and nearly $180,000 of its own money to buy the development rights, which, of course, will never be used. The property will continue to be farmed by the Lindaberry family, which has held it for six generations.
According to Frank Pinto, director of MCADB, the program aims to keep farmland in its current state by preventing developers from taking over sites "that are easy to develop. Such properties usually need very little site preparation."
