HARTFORD, CT-Beginning on June 7, FleetBoston Financial Corp. will begin consolidating 12 bank branches in Connecticut. The closures were necessitated because of bank branch overlaps caused by the recent merger deal consummated with Summit Bancorp, Fleet officials say.

The consolidation consists of four Fleet branches and eight former Summit Bank branches. Ten of the 12 bank branches scheduled for closure are located in Fairfield County. All consolidating branches have an alternative Fleet branch less than one mile away, FleetBoston officials note.

Consolidations are expected to begin on June 7 for former Summit branches and June 22 for Fleet branches, following completion of a 90-day notification period to customers. After completion of the consolidation program, Fleet will operate 183 branches in Connecticut.
