George C. Washington, a Belgian chemist built the factory and started the G. Washington Coffee Co. in 1926, ran it for another 20 years, and sold it right after World War II. The brand lived on until the late 1950s when a Coca-Cola subsidiary bought the plant and eventually turned it into a Tetley Tea operation. It closed three years ago.
Roseland, which has reduced the size of the project since its initial proposal, still needs a zoning change to break ground. Traffic concerns need to be addressed as well, and as part of its agreement with the borough, Roseland will reserve 18 units for low- and moderate-income occupancy by seniors. Once all the pieces are in place, Roseland projects a two-year construction timetable.
