The money is part of a $115 million economic incentive package that included tax breaks to lure the hub to the Triad.
The $36 million will fund the removal of three intersections at Bryan Boulevard, a major entrance to the airport, and create one major intersection. Despite approval for the money, however, the Federal Aviation Authority is still considering a tunnel instead of a road, according to published reports.
The FAA is completing an environmental study of the proposed cargo hub. The study is also looking at the impact of another runway at the airport, which has raised objections from some neighboring areas.
The Fed-Ex hub is expected to spark a flame of new development, with some businesses already attempting to gain a head start on future commercial projects.
