Newport Northwest LLC, an affiliate of Newport Generation Inc., plans to joint venture with Cogentrix Energy and Avista Power to build the largest of three gas plants in the area. Avista already operates a 160-megawatt plant nearby while Cogentrix Energy plans to open a 270-watt plant in July.

The new plant means jobs for 275 more workers during construction and perhaps 30 full-time jobs when the facility is completed in 2004. The 80-acre Newport site, called the Kootenai Power Project, is similar to scope to a planned facility at Wallula, WA, 17 miles south of Pasco. That plant has not been approved and is being considered by Washington State's Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council.
