WaferTech began production in Vancouver in mid-1998, and was producing 20,000 chips a month en route to 40,000 a month by the end of 2001. The company is now believed to be operating at a fraction of capacity as a result of companies needing less production to meet slumping demand.
WaferTech is majority owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. TSMC, the largest chip foundry company in the world, has said utilization of its capacity dropped to 70% during the first quarter of 2000 and will drop to around 50% over the next few months.
