City-hired architect Milford Wayne Donaldson will lead the meeting, scheduled for 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St.
Donaldson says the city will review an area bounded by the University of California, San Diego on the north, Turquoise Street to the south, Interstate 5 on the east and the ocean on the west. The study includes all of the area's up to 8,000 commercial and residential properties.
The city defines "historic" as structures 45 years or older that still have their original architectural design and are in reasonably good condition. Guidelines require the properties to have distinctive characteristics of a style or a period or highlight an area's historic, cultural, social or economic development.
The city of San Diego conducted a similar survey of 40,000 buildings in the Mid-city area five years ago, and found up to 6,000 buildings that could be designated historic sites.
