Southwestern Bell holds more than 500,000 sf of office and retail space in San Antonio. The Performa Datapoint site would have served as the headquarters for the phone company's Data Services Division. Now, it's back to the drawing boards.
Inside sources say Southwestern Bell and San Antonio reportedly are engaging in tax-incentive talks that could put the division in another section of town instead of the city's northwest submarket. Word has it that talks could take up to a year before a decision emerges, GlobeSt.com has been told.
Southwestern Bell's Data Services Division currently is located in an older downtown property near corporate headquarters. That spot too is 200,000 sf, which would have made the Performa lease an even swap.
It's been nearly eight years since Southwestern Bell relocated corporate operations from St. Louis to San Antonio. In that time, it has proven to be an economic driver for the city, helping it to transition from a heavily vested military town to a tourist hotspot. Though its business is a natural profit maker, the data services and wireless divisions have evolved into its strongest market leaders.
