Facing intense competition from such retailers as Linens 'n Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, not to mention department stores, HomePlace already closed 22 stores last month and 38 in January, according to Alan Rifkin, a securities analyst at Lehman Brothers.
The home furnishings and textiles chain has already closed two stores in the Twin Cities -- a store in Roseville in 1998 as part of a previous owners bankruptcy reorganization, and a store in Bloomington early this year. The chain also said it decided to close itsheadquarters offices in Myrtle Beach, SC as well as its distribution centers.
