The property will be sold to the highest bidder, even if the price is below the asset's taxable value of $2.7 million.

The mansion, built on a 90-foot hill overlooking Lake Lucy, is off Lake County Road 565 near Groveland, 28 miles west of Downtown Orlando.

Researchers in the offices of the Lake County and Orange County Property Appraiser tell GlobeSt.com the property is the largest of its kind in Lake County and one of the five largest in Central Florida. Casa de la Loma translates to House on the Hill.

McEwen couldn't be reached at GlobeSt.com's publication deadline to learn why he is selling the property. But people who have done business with him tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity that McEwen "needs the funds to get into other things."

A banking representative who has advised McEwen on occasion tells GlobeSt.com, also on condition of anonymity, "He is an entrepreneur and entrepreneurs are always eager to try their hand at new enterprises which require a certain amount of startup capital."

Although the property is taxed as residential, it has all the trappings of a high-end commercial hotel or corporate retreat, brokers familiar with the asset tell GlobeSt.com.

Among the amenities: a 200-guest capacity ballroom; a commercial-like Scottish pub, a three-hole Professional Golf Association-quality golf course, two commercial-sized gourmet kitchens, a movie theater, a swimming pool and, of course, a climate-controlled wine cellar that might be found in a five-star resort hotel.

The mansion also has seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a 60-foot-high ceiling leading from the first to the third floors.

Only bidders holding a cashier's check for $100,000 will be admitted to the sale. Unsuccessful bidders get their $100,000 back at the end of the day. J.P. King Auction Co. of Gadsden, AL is handling the sale.
