Well-known economist Angelos Angelou is the official escort for the Portuguese delegation, which is seeking ways to lure semiconductor trade to Portugal. Goncalo Melo and Miguel Garcia toured AMD, Applied Materials, Silicon Laboratories, LSI Logic and Banderacom. The goal is to recruit fabrication, testing, assembly and design facilities, says Melo. Portugal, like Austin, recognizes the economic impact that the semiconductor trade can have on an area, according to a prepared statement by Melo.
Metro Austin has the second-largest concentration of semiconductor employers in the US and third-largest employee base in semiconductor manufacturing. Austin companies employ more than 33,300 workers. The top five are Motorola, IBM, Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Materials and Samsung.
