Officials at the Greater Tucson Economic Council believe Tucson's ranking will rise again next year, perhaps cracking the Top 20. This year's list is based on data through 1999, but Tucson had a stellar year in 2000 in job creation and earned income, says Larry Aldrich, chairman of GTEC.
May's issue of Governing magazine also puts Tucson among the best cities in the nation for capitalizing on an industry cluster concept. "Tucson is a good example of a place that has figured much of this out and made many of the right decisions," the magazine states.Tucson has fostered the growth in several industries, notably optics and software development, which has, in turn, attracted more and more successful companies and higher-skilled employees.
