This move by Hines is in reaction to President George Bush's call for expanded energy conservation efforts. According to Hines, 28 of its 150 properties are certified. This is 12% of the national number of EPA-certified buildings. Hines' plan to double this number within the coming 18 months includes improving energy efficiency in 32 commercial properties by the end of 2002 and benchmarking 33 other properties in the next few months to determine whether they can participate in the program.

"The nation needs to conserve energy, and we are accelerating our efforts to do our part," says Hines. Houston office buildings currently in the Energy Star program include One Shell Plaza, Greenspoint Plaza, Williams Tower, 1100 Louisiana and Phoenix Tower.
