Irvine-based HomeBase says most of the 20 rechristened House2Home stores to be opened over the next 60 days will be in California. An initial round of 17 House2Homes were opened in various parts of Los Angeles County over the Memorial Day weekend.

For years, HomeBase tried to compete against Home Depot Inc., Lowe's Cos. and other big chains in the home-improvement market. But it finally threw in the towel last December, saying the HI industry has become glutted and that it would be virtually impossible to turn a profit when the larger chains had the better economies of scale to succeed in the low-profit-margin business.

Though HomeBase simultaneously announced plans to permanently close 22 of its giant warehouse stores in California, it also said it would convert 62 others into House2Home outlets. The new concept includes furniture and a much larger selection of wallpaper, paint and related items than can be found in a typical Home Depot or Lowe's Home Improvement store.
