At the same time, Walt Disney World is in its final phase of laying off a total 1,650 employees at its 30,000-worker attraction in suburban Lake Buena Vista, FL.

Property management staffers and an undisclosed number of other salaried workers associated with operating Disney's theme park properties are among the eliminated positions, sources intimate with the layoffs tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity.

The cuts at Hughes Supply follow the company's disappointing fourth quarter performance when it lost $9.1 million or 39 cents per diluted share, its first quarterly loss in 10 years.

The company bounced back in the first quarter of this year that ended April 30, posting a net profit of $6.4 million on revenue of $775 million. That showing, however, was 55% under the $14.4 million in net income recorded in first quarter 2000.

Walt Disney Co. is trimming 4,000 workers from its global staff of 120,000, a 3% reduction. Disney's layoffs follow lower quarterly profits and a slowdown in theme park attendance, the company says.
