But the Essex & Sussex will survive: Current owner Applied Development Co. of Hoboken, NJ is converting the historic property into 165 luxury rental apartments for residents 62 years and older. Work is currently underway, with the units slated to be ready for occupancy early next year, according to Applied senior vice president Allen Goldman.
According to Goldman, the property will offer "hotel-like services and facilities, like 24-hour concierge service." It will also have a gourmet dining room, housekeeping, health club and a theater.
Hospitality on the site dates back to 1891 when a cottage community was opened. That venue gave way to the five-story Essex & Sussex 23 years later. A subsequent expansion added the building's north wing. In 1980, the hotel and its beach were used as sets in the movie version of "Ragtime."
