York Hunter Construction of Newark is the construction manager for the overall project, which at the Busch/Livingston campus includes $26 million in new building construction, renovations and deferred maintenance. The work, which will focus on mechanical and electrical upgrades and lab renovations in 12 buildings, is expected to be finished by the end of next year.

"We are utilizing a Web-based project management system to track budgets and schedules," according to Robert McCulley, vice president of York Hunter. "We are also taking special caution in initiating careful phasing and logistics planning to maximize safety and minimally impact students and faculty during construction."

Rutgers' main College Avenue Campus, meanwhile, will receive interior and exterior improvements to a total of 20 buildings at a cost of more than $11 million. Among other things, roofs, window units, HVAC and electrical systems will be replaced in several of the buildings, five of which are listed on the New Jersey State Historic Register.

"We're taking special care with these exterior renovations, and we're handling each one of them as an historic renovation project," says McCulley. He notes that the College Campus portion of the capital improvement project is slated for completion by the second quarter of next year.

Among this and other ongoing projects, York Hunter is the construction manager for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's $40-million Piscataway/New Brunswick Master Plan. The project includes $30 million worth of work at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and School of Public Health, as well as a 20,000-sf lab research annex, all in New Brunswick.
