A rooftop-mounted crane system has been employed for the process and will facilitate semi-annual surface cleaning. The Bank of America Plaza was the first building in the nation to be outfitted with the system. The custom cranes and platform baskets enable crews to reach all angles of the 72-story skyscraper.
The two 11-foot-tall cranes, custom built in Spain, weigh more than 25,000 pounds each. The cranes' components were airlifted by helicopter onto secondary roof decks of the 72-story office structure and permanently mounted. The strategy also marked the first time that the AESA-15 cranes were hoisted by helicopters.
The 45-foot height of the booms barred installation on the facility's upper roof due to FAA regulations. The plaza is on the approach route for Dallas' Love Field, home of Dallas-based Southwest Airlines corporate headquarters.
Cleaning contractor April Building Services is using five gallons of Joy dishwashing detergent and 832 gallons of water to complete the exterior scrubbing. The 921-foot plaza, the tallest building in North Texas, provides office space for more than 6,000 workers and has more than 690,000 sf of exterior glass.
