"While many U.S. airports are experiencing serious space and runway constraints, Northwest is in a strong position to grow our business in Detroit as well as at our other U.S. hubs at Minneapolis/St. Paul and Memphis."

"This is great news for Wayne County, Michigan and Northwest Airlines," notes Edward H. McNamara, Wayne County executive. "The terminal is proof the region is succeeding and growing. And it represents a commitment by Northwest Airlines to be our partner in building on that success for years to come." "We want to ensure a seamless transition from the existing terminal to the new terminal for our customers," says Anderson. "It is clear that the best approach for all involved is to open the doors after the holiday rush.

The terminal features an international processing facility with the ability to process 3,200 passengers per hour, two 200-passenger indoor trams and 1.5 miles of moving walkways.
