Catalytica Energy Systems Inc., a public company based in Mountain View, will be setting up shop in Fiesta Tech Centre, a business park at the southeast corner of Baseline Road and Arizona Avenue. Phoenix-based Hewson Development Corp. is constructing build-to-suit for the high-tech firm on a parcel at 1388 N. Tech Blvd.. The building will be ready to occupy in October.

Steven Schwarz, Hewson's senior vice president, says the attraction for Catalytica is Fiesta Tech Centre's "location, mature park-like landscaping and the corporate appearance of the building design." The business park is less than a mile south of Superstition Freeway and near the Chandler Tech Corridor, which has a number of high-tech manufacturing firms such as Motorola and Intel.

Catalytica is a leader in the discovery, development and manufacturing of advanced products for more effective energy production. Its first product, Xonon Cool Combustion, is a breakthrough combustion technology that achieves ultra-low emission levels for gas turbine power production. It also is working on fuel processing for fuel cells and adaptation of Xonon technology to micro-turbines, hybrid gas turbine fuel cells and diesel applications.

The company currently employs 85 people, but will expand to 150 after the Gilbert move. The new jobs primarily will consist of executive, administrative, manufacturing and engineering positions. "Catalytica Energy System's decision to expand their corporate and manufacturing operations in Gilbert demonstrates that Arizona has the necessary ingredients to successfully grow companies," says Sandra Watson, director of business development for the Arizona Department of Commerce.

The Phoenix office of Robert J. Kawa & Co., with brokers Bob Kawa and Stephen Steinberg, represented Catalytica Energy Systems in the lease negotiations. Hewson's Schwarz and Jason Meszaros acted for the building owner.

Hewson Development, founded in 1976, is one of the more active industrial developers in metropolitan Phoenix. The Phoenix-based firm, which also operates an office in Southern California, has developed nearly 11 million sf of commercial real estate in Arizona, California, Mississippi, Tennessee and Utah.
