The commission has postponed talks with Waterford-PPM , a 500-room hotel on East Harbor Island in order to focus fully on the Campbell site, which one commissioner termed "a must-do project."

The commission voted to put out a request seeking developers interested in building a 1,000- to 1,200-room hotel on the site. And the port wants to do it fast because the hotel is intended to eventually serve the expanded convention center, which opens in about three weeks.

The former shipyard site near the convention center, once a crucial element to financing for the new Downtown ballpark. Manchester Resorts LP JMI Realty, the real estate company of Padres majority owner John Moores, battled legally over rights to build the hotel.

The city has since adopted a plan that eliminates the project from the ballpark financing picture. Manchester has dropped out, and JMI officials say they are likely to do the same.
