A 65,000-sf performing arts center with 400-seat theater, dance studios, classrooms and space for street-level retail would replace a two-story, 14,000-sf commercial building constructed in 1902. It would be built across the street from the $2.8-million Little Black Pearl Workshop, a cultural and education center.
"The new home of the Muntu Dance Theater will be a great addition to the North Kenwood Oakland neighborhood," says Mayor Richard M. Daley. "It will host a wide variety of cultural arts activities and entertainment, as well as encourage more economic development in the area."
Muntu's dance company has received international acclaim for its artistic quality.
